Google's Maps Street View service pilots indoor photos

Google has started a pilot project allowing the public to look inside shops and other businesses found on its maps.

The feature is an extension of the firm's Street View technology, which already lets users view 360-degree exterior images.
The existing service prompted some privacy complaints from people who claimed the technology was intrusive.

However, Google said the new scheme was on a completely voluntary basis.
"Building on the Google Art Project, which took Street View technology inside 17 acclaimed museums, this project is another creative implementation of Street View technology, to help businesses as they build their online presence," said a company spokesman.
"We hope to enable businesses to highlight the qualities that make their locations stand out through professional, high-quality imagery."

Initially the roll-out is limited to select locations including London, Paris and a number of cities in Japan, Australia, New Zealand and the US.
The US company said it was beginning the process by inviting the most searched types of businesses to request a visit by its photographers.
Google said these included restaurants, hotels, shops, gyms and vehicle repair workshops.
However, it has ruled out big-brand chains for the time being. Hospitals and lawyers' offices have also been excluded.

Business owners are told they must warn their customers and employees about the photoshoot before it begins. Google has promised it will blur out or refuse to publish any images that include bystanders.
The photoshoots will produce 360-degree images using fish-eye and wide-angle lenses as well as stills. Business owners are also invited to upload their own pictures.

The search site notes that all photographs taken will become its property and that they may be used for other applications. Business owners may request their removal, but the terms and conditions do not include a commitment to comply.

"Retail is always a competitive sector, but this is particularly true at a time of falling disposable incomes," said Sarah Cordey, spokeswoman for the British Retail Consortium.

"Many retailers are increasing their online presence and use of technological innovations, so this is a development some businesses will no doubt consider with interest."

China gets tough on social media

China gets tough on social media

SHANGHAI: China's Communist Party has set out to curtail social networking following years of unfettered growth after its top committee issued an edict launching a new drive to control open messaging.
Websites such as Sina Weibo, a Chinese version of Twitter, have been allowed to grow explosively, with 400 million Chinese posting opinions and sharing information.
The Central Committee of the Communist Party, a 300-strong body of party, state and army leaders, has signalled its alarm that there is no equivalent to the Great Firewall that marshals the internet. It has promised to ''strengthen the guidance and administration of social internet services and instant communications tools'' to ensure ''orderly dissemination of information''.

Anyone spreading ''false rumours'' was threatened with stern punishment.
Chinese censors have struggled to keep pace with the websites. As quickly as they delete individual messages, they find they have already been spread by hundreds, or thousands, of others. ''It has been said that China maintains strict control over the internet, but it is actually quite difficult,'' Liu Yunshan, the head of the propaganda department, said in September.
Two events appear to have convinced China's leaders that the websites cannot be allowed to continue unchecked.
The government was deeply alarmed by the way the internet was used to galvanise the Arab Spring protests across the Middle East. It is also jittery about the ''Occupy'' movement that has been sweeping the West.
Sites such as Sina Weibo, which was launched in 2009, just after China banned Twitter, have quickly become part of the mainstream.
In response to government pressure, Sina has hired 1000 staff to monitor the flow of messages through its servers.
Yin Hong, a professor at Tsinghua's journalism and communications school, said the central government found Weibo a valuable way of gauging public opinion.

 We got it all
The empire ever falls
We got all control, untold power to
Do what we wanna do
We got the moves
But there's nothing left to prove
There's only stardust memories
We can make come true

Dear Miami
You're the first to go
Disappearing
Under melting snow
Each and everyone
Turn your critical eye
On the burning sun
And try not to cry

My Wicked Beijing Trip 2011 - We Australians have it the best!

I used to live in Beijing China, moving there to study Chinese language & culture with my international friends at the age of 20. Recently, I went back to this AMAZING city, and though it was a shame not to share any of the pictures or stories from my life there.

Did I learn any Chinese, ha, but I do have some of my best friends there, really missing you Fuzz, Jobby, Canadian Charles and Davemannn. All expats living in Beijing, in one of the worlds most beautifully cultured and ancient cities. A small piece of my heart will always be with Beijing.

Hopefully going back to promote the awesome Karenji app for iPhone, that i've taken a total warming to.

By the way, Facebook is gross people, whereas providing something interesting for curious web browsers is just thrilling. Enjoy my pictures. 2 x per day, hehe. I couldn't be assed with this horrendously slow internet.

Adios fellow Sudoku nutters,

TSNut

SUDOKU ONLINE!

So you thought Sudoku came from the Land of the Rising Sun ...

The Sudoku story began in 1783 when Leonhard Euler, a Swiss mathematician, devised 'Latin Squares', which he described as 'a new kind of magic squares'. Euler had come up with a grid in which every number or sym bol appears once in each row or column. More than two centuries later, the difference for Sudoku players is that the grid is subdivided into blocks of nine.

She added: 'I like the puzzle a lot. It's accessible to most people and that's part of the charm. Although some are more difficult than others, the concept is easy to grasp and it doesn't take for ever to solve. There is a universality to it and it becomes addictive.'

I LOVE KARENJI - Still without friends!

Sudoku Sudoku!

Where are all the Sudoku fans?

Come on guys, I'm beginning to think there's no one out there?????

 What is Sudoku?
Sudoku 数独 sūdoku, is a logic-based, number-placement puzzle. The objective is to fill a 9×9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3×3 sub-grids that compose the grid (also called "boxes", "blocks", "regions", or "sub-squares") contains all of the digits from 1 to 9. The puzzle setter provides a partially completed grid, which typically has a unique solution.
Completed puzzles are always a type of Latin Square with an additional constraint on the contents of individual regions. For example, the same single integer may not appear twice in the same 9x9 playing board row or column or in any of the nine 3x3 sub regions of the 9x9 playing board.
The puzzle was popularized in 1986 by the Japanese puzzle company Nikolo, under the name Sudoku, meaning single number. It became an international hit in 2005.

Sudoku puzzles to print are no more, with most smart-phones having Sudoku applications available for purchase.  Multi-player Sudoku, similar to scrabble, is a MUST HAVE iPhone application.

The Secret Life of the Karenji Addict

As a Sudoku nut who spends most their time catching a montreal train to and from work, I was absolutely delighted to stumble upon the wickedly twisted iphone app, Karenji.

My deadly affliction with Sudoku began when I was young, after dad bought me home one of those groovy pads full of Sudoku puzzles. Always wanting to share the Sudoku experience with my often 'distracted' friends, I was always annoyed that it wasn't able to be played competitively.

Free online games annoy me, so that was out the question, and playing the Facebook version was a total no no. Alas, iOS5 came along meaning that Apple's new game centre that lets you 'meet your match with new friend recommendations based on the games you play and the players you already know. [apple]

For me, this meant that my dream of finally being able to play games with likeminded people is about to come true.

So my question is, am I the only one out there who has been craving to play Sudoku with others?

Vive la soduku et vive la Karenji!
